Czech MEP slams Scholz, says Kyiv needs more weapons

News   |  24.03. 2022

Germany became a target of criticism due to its reluctance to act and provide Ukraine with more military support, as has been requested by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

According to Czech politicians, Western countries must meet Kyiv’s demands and send more weapons. Otherwise, the EU could face serious security consequences.

“Olaf Scholz repeats Russian propaganda’s nonsense. If we do not deliver weapons to Ukraine, we will leave them to their own devices. He (Scholz) is completely out of his mind,” said Czech MEP Tomáš Zdechovský (EPP).

Despite Germany’s U-turn on foreign policy and decision to supply Ukraine with weapons, Czech politicians are convinced this is not enough.

Therefore, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala wants to ask his counterparts for further military assistance to Ukraine during the European Council summit in Brussels (24-25 March). The Czech leader is convinced that if Ukraine falls, Russia will not stop at its borders but move further into Europe across the Baltics and Central Eastern Europe.

“If Ukraine, which is fighting a courageous battle, does not have enough military equipment, it has no chance of succeeding against the Russian superiority,” Fiala warned in an interview for Seznam Zprávy.

“The Czech Republic is doing its best, and many countries with experience of Russian aggression are helping, but other countries need to help as well. Ukraine will not win without those big strong countries,” Fiala added without mentioning specific states.

Czechia has been calling for a stricter approach against Russia even before the Russian attack on Ukraine. However, Europe was reluctant to step up its efforts.

“Unfortunately, Europe has been reckless regarding its own security. Now we are paying the price,” Fiala said.
